Country of birth of parents explained

Country of birth of parents shows whether each person's parents were born in Australia or overseas. It sorts people into five groups: both parents born overseas, mother only born overseas, father only born overseas, both parents born in Australia, and Not stated.

These figures are Place Forecast estimates based on Census data published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Each person is counted once, based on where their mother and father were born. For the person's own country of birth, see Birthplace. For the cultural or ethnic background they name, see Ancestry.

Not stated counts people whose Census form carried no usable birthplace for one or both parents.

Read it with Birthplace to see first and second generation patterns. A parent's country of birth does not tell you whether the person identifies with that country. For the wider culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) picture, read it with Language used at home and Ancestry too.

The total counts people at their usual place of residence. It covers people in non-private homes such as hospitals, aged-care homes, hostels, and student housing. It does not count overseas visitors.

Reading this data fairly

These figures show how people answered Census questions. Here are the equity caveats to keep in mind. They keep the numbers fair:

  • Country of birth of parents is one of the Census topics used in CALD analysis. On its own it is not a measure of need.

See the marker methodology for how these figures are calculated and their limitations.
