Acknowledgement of Country

This is Place Info's Acknowledgement of Country: a recognition of the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands and waters where we work and where the people in our forecasts live.

Place Info acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung People of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Owners of the land where we are based. Our registered office is in Fitzroy North.

We are a remote-first team. Our colleagues live and work from many Countries across south-eastern Australia and beyond, and we acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of each of those Countries.

We pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples whose Countries are home to the people in our forecasts and the councils we serve. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters, sky, and community, and we pay our respects to Elders past and present.

Why we acknowledge

An Acknowledgement of Country recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived on, cared for, and held knowledge of these lands and waters for tens of thousands of years, and continue to do so. For Place Info it is also a moment to think about the work we do, because we present demographic data about everyone who lives across this continent, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander data

Place Info presents demographic data drawn from the Australian Bureau of Statistics: Census, Estimated Resident Population, and vital statistics. Population totals we publish include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Where we publish Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander data drawn from ABS sources, it inherits the methodology and the limitations of those sources.

Some limitations to be aware of:

  • The 2021 ABS Post Enumeration Survey found Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were undercounted in the Census at substantially higher rates than the wider population (17.4% net undercount, compared with 0.7% nationally).
  • Standard Estimated Resident Population figures inherit that undercount. The projections we publish inherit it in turn. Place Info does not adjust for this undercount; users planning services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities should consult the separate ABS series and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations directly.
  • ABS publishes a separate Estimates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians series on a different cycle and methodology. For community-specific demographic information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations, we encourage people to use that series and to defer to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations.
