Average Household Size of Dwellings explained
Average household size is the key indicator for the housing domain. It shows the average number of people per dwelling, by dwelling type.
The figure is worked out by dividing the enumerated population in each dwelling type by the number of occupied dwellings of that type. For later estimated years, average household size is worked out by dividing the resident population in dwellings by the number of occupied dwellings for that year.
For projected years, the average household size is carried forward from the jump-off year. Projected resident population in dwellings is then worked out from the average household size and the number of occupied dwellings for each dwelling type. A smaller household size means the same number of dwellings holds fewer people. When a council assumption supplies its own average household size, that figure is blended into the area's average for that dwelling type. The blend uses the dwelling stock already in the area that year, before the assumption's dwellings are added. The blended average then applies to the whole stock in all later years, including new dwellings built after the assumption.
