Place Forecast Update #8: Average Household Size

We’ve updated Place Forecast with its first housing key indicator:
average household size.

We previously had two key indicators: population and dwellings. If you divide the former by the latter, you get the average number of people living in a dwelling, which is the average household size.

Because we also have different dwelling types, we calculated the average household size per dwelling type. In our forecasts, you can now see the average household size for private detached and for medium or high density dwellings, and for non-private dwellings.

(Quick break here: Yes, those are our new horizontal bar charts, long and elegant, replacing our stumpy vertical bar charts for all the dwelling-related charts. This way, the bars benefit much better from our charts' landscape format, making it easier for the chart aficionado to interpret the bars and the values they represent.)

As usual, you can see these average household sizes per small area. We also have pages with comparison charts for average household sizes.

To calculate the average household size, we had to find out which part of the population is occupying which dwelling type. Because we think this is quite useful for our forecast users, we created a report for that.

Each of these numbers comes with its own detail and comparison pages, as well as its rate, which answers the question: How many people are living in this dwelling type?

If that looks good to you, or you have questions or want to learn more, reply to this email to contact us or book a demo.

With the calculation of average household sizes, we have everything in place right now to project the dwellings beyond 2021 with building approvals. We. Are. So. Excited. About. This!! It might be because of Halloween approaching, but that flat dwelling line haunts us by now, and we can't wait to make it move.

The ABS released estimated deaths data for 2023 Thursday week. We got our custom release (by sex and single year of age) on Tuesday. By Wednesday morning, we had updated all our client forecasts. 22 hours and 8 minutes. Mic drop.

To put that in perspective, in our last product update, we shared our joy about how fast we updated all forecasts with the 2023 ERP data. Have a look at this chart now:

That's a time reduction of 59% or an improvement of 143.9% faster, depending on whether you are an hourglass half-full or half-empty person. Neat!
