Place Forecast Update #4: Migration

In the year ending 30 June 2023, Australia’s population experienced a record gain of 518,000 people. This substantial increase has far-reaching implications, and we are now equipped to forecast its impact on small areas and councils.

Currently, we show estimated (past data) and projected (future data) in-migration and its rate, as well as out-migration and its rate. We show data 30 years into the future by single years of age and sex. We also show migration data on a small-area level compared to other small areas. Everything you are used to with births and deaths, we provide for migration data as well.

All migration, as well as natural events like births and deaths, form our population forecast.

Migration data was heavily impacted by the pandemic. To keep our forecasts up-to-date, we found a way to update migration data annually.

As always, we’re happy to show you our work. Just hit “reply” to this email, and we arrange a demo for you.

Admittedly, it took us some time to get migration up and running. We needed to upgrade our systems and make them more robust because we’ve already welcomed our fifth client (yay!). When we had migration running on census data alone, we weren’t happy with the results and worked on incorporating more recent estimates. All that took a bit of time, but we found the result was worth it. Place Forecast is a complete population forecast now, and we’re proud of it.

We take a bit of a breather now — not too long, though! — and then we dive straight into working on our housing forecast!
