Renewable energy systems added shows how many solar panels, batteries, solar water heaters and heat pump water heaters went in each year. It counts systems, not homes.

The figures come from the Clean Energy Regulator (CER). They count homes and small businesses alike.

Each year is a financial year. It is named after the June it ends in, so 2026 runs from July 2025 to June 2026. A system can be added to the figures up to a year after it goes in. So the last twelve months are still filling in, the newest months most. Until a whole July to June is in, the latest year is the last twelve months. It is named for the month it ends in.

Batteries are counted from July 2025, when the Cheaper Home Batteries Program began.

The regulator publishes its figures by postcode. Place Forecast gives each mesh block a share of its postcode, by private dwellings. A postcode that reaches into a nearby council is split between the two. So every small area inside one postcode has the same figure per dwelling. Small areas differ only where they lie in different postcodes.

A figure per dwelling divides by the private dwellings the 2021 Census counted, so areas of different size compare fairly.

Reading this data fairly

  • A figure per dwelling is not the share of homes with a system. An upgrade or a new system on the same roof counts again, and so does a system on a shop or an office.
  • Homes in a block of flats share one roof. An area with many flats can read low for that reason alone.
  • A year with few systems may reflect fewer rebates that year. Read a single year beside the years around it.
  • Usually only an owner can put a system on a roof, and it costs money up front. So fewer systems go in where many households are renting or incomes are lower. A lower figure there shows where fewer households have had the chance to add one. Tenure type and landlord type show how many are renting.

Each month is also shown on a page of its own. To see how much solar power went in, in kilowatts, look at solar power added.
