Out-migration Rate Explained Place Forecast Feature

Out-migration rate shows how common moves out of an area are at each age. This page gives out-migration rates by age and sex. Each rate is the number of people who leave per person at that age in a given year.

Place Forecast works out these rates from migration estimates and population estimates from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Each rate divides the number who moved out at a given age by the people at risk for that age and sex.

The total row divides total people who moved out by the total at risk, giving a single weighted rate for the year. In projected years, out-migration rates are applied first. Migration balancing then adjusts the figures so that births, deaths, in-migration, and out-migration all align with the total.
