Medium or High Density Dwelling Explained Demographic Concept

A medium or high density dwelling is a flat, unit, or townhouse that shares a wall, roof, or floor with another home. The ABS calls these “other dwellings” in the Census. This covers all homes that are not a separate house.

The share of these dwellings has grown over time in many areas. Inner-city councils tend to have the most, driven by new unit and apartment builds.

How Place Forecast Uses This

Place Forecast shows medium or high density dwellings on the structure page next to detached dwellings. Structure rates are carried forward from the jump-off year to project the split between the two types each year.
