Place Forecast Feature
Demographic Concept
Birthplace shows residents by their country of birth, including Australia.
These figures are Place Forecast estimates based on Census data published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Each person is counted by the country they were born in. Take someone born in one country. They later lived in another, then moved to Australia. They are still counted under their country of birth.
The ABS uses official country names. Some may differ from the names people use day to day.
Born elsewhere is the ABS group for people born in countries the ABS table does not list separately.
All other categories holds people whose country of birth is not shown on its own.
Country of birth not stated means the person's country of birth was not provided.
The figures count people where they usually live. They include people living in non-private dwellings such as hospitals, aged-care homes, hostels, and student housing. People here on a visit from another country are left out.
Reading this data fairly
These figures show how people answered Census questions. Here are the equity caveats to keep in mind. They keep the numbers fair:
- Country of birth is one of the Census topics used in CALD analysis. On its own it is not a measure of need.
See the marker methodology for how these figures are calculated and their limitations.
