Birthplace explained Place Forecast Feature

Abbreviated as BPLP; referenced by

Birthplace shows the country of birth of people in an area. It includes Australia, the top overseas countries of birth, and a Born elsewhere group.

These figures are Place Forecast estimates based on Census data published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Each person is counted by the country they were born in. Take someone born in one country. They later lived in another, then moved to Australia. They are still counted under their country of birth.

The ABS uses official country names. Some may differ from the names people use day to day.

The Born elsewhere group holds countries that are too small to show as their own row. It can take in many different countries and groups.

The ABS publishes a separate Not stated group for this data. It marks when the country of birth question was left blank.

The figures count people where they usually live. They include people living in non-private dwellings such as hospitals, aged-care homes, hostels, and student housing. People here on a visit from another country are left out. People born in Australia are counted too.
