The areas page shows the boundaries used by this forecast. A map shows each area type as a layer that can be turned on or off.
Place Forecast works with seven area types. The local government area is the council boundary. Small areas are custom areas set up for each forecast. Statistical area 2 and statistical area 1 are standard ABS geographies. Suburbs and localities are the ABS versions of the named suburbs and towns people know. Mesh blocks are the smallest ABS units. They are the building blocks for all other areas. The state or territory layer gives wider context.
Each area is built from mesh blocks. Place Forecast links mesh blocks to larger areas through a process called tessellation. Place Forecast downscales data to mesh blocks and then aggregates them into larger areas through tessellation.
