The Australian Standard Classification of Religious Groups is how the ABS sorts religion answers from the Census. The 2021 Census used the 2016 edition.
The top level has seven broad groups. They are Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Other Religions, and one group for secular beliefs, other spiritual beliefs and no religion. Each broad group splits into narrower groups. Christianity has the most, with eighteen. Other Religions has nine, and the no-religion group has three. The other four have one each.
The list is a tree. ABS rules drive it, not how a person sees their faith. Two people of the same faith can land in different groups if their write-in answers differ.
The Religion marker shows thirty groups from the ABS Census table. The table is based on this classification.
