Mortality Rate Explained Place Forecast Feature

Mortality rate shows how many deaths occur per person at each age. This page gives age-specific mortality rates by age and sex.

Place Forecast calculates these rates from registered deaths and population estimates published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Each rate divides deaths at a given age by the population at risk.

The total row divides total deaths by total population at risk, giving a single weighted rate for the year. Projected mortality rates drive future deaths in the cohort-component method. As the method moves each age group forward from the jump-off year, the rates set how many people die at every step. Lower rates mean fewer deaths and a population that lives longer on average.
