Deaths is the number of people who die in an area each year. This page shows total deaths over time and a breakdown by age and sex.
Estimated death figures come from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which compiles records from state and territory death registries. Each death is linked to the person's age, sex, and usual place of residence.
Projected deaths use mortality rates carried forward by the cohort-component method from the jump-off year.
Deaths are one of the four components of population change, along with births, in-migration, and out-migration. More deaths than births means natural decrease, which can only be offset by net migration.
